QUICK!
Off the top of your head name three black models (NOT NAOMI, ALEK WEK, OR IMAN)in the current fashion scene signed to the top women agecies right here in New York. Bet you can't... Well me neither can I!
Out of curiousity, I went on their perspective websites, and guess what?, there aren't very many. This is quite sad, because beyond it being wrong on a social standpoint, aesthetically (even if on a superficial level) they have A LOT to bring to the table. This business is all about the aesthetics, so this doesn't make sense. Why does it continue to be ignored?
Here's lowly line up. (Sorry for the long post, but i've got a point to prove here, or atleast encourage some sort of discussion on this issue)
IMG's (1) single "sista" ALEK WEK
DNA: (1) OLUCHI
SUPREME: (0) aka none.
WOMEN: (0) nope. none here.
MARILYN: a whopping (3).
KIMANEE WILSON
EMANUELA DE PAULA
ANA BELA
FORD: didn't have a public book for their women's division, but hey, they've got
CHANEL IMAN which I adore. (I think I might have mentioned this once or twice...)
NEXT: (3)
AGBANI DAREGO
JASMIN BURGESS
SELENA AYALA
ELITE: (1)
DAMARIS LEWIS
TRUMP: Leading the pack at (4).
KIARA KABAKURU
KELLY GERVAIS
CASSIE LEWIS
CYNTHIA BAILEY
MAJOR:(1)
NY MODEL MANAGEMENT: (2 OUT OF 56)
NICOLE FISCELLA
NADINE WILLIS
Excuse the long post, but something's not right here. All of these agencies have hundreds of models on their women's boards, but the fact that I can list all the black ones on one post is insane!
Whats going on with the agencies in NY? Yes, I'll go "there". The Women's boards of many of the top agency and management companies are lacking diversity, and getting quite boring. Bookers- shake it up a bit! lets not be so predictable. How many blondes can you have on your boards?
Of course this is nothing new, but seriously... we can-and SHOULD do better than this.
People, people, people...we're being bamboozled.
